My stash from the Bead Show

A friend told me there was a bead show in Toms River about 15 minutes from me - I didn't even know. Went yesterday afternoon - it was a small show at the Holiday Inn but very crowded - I was surprised. The two photos are some of the beads and other stuff I bought. I spent about 3 hours there - looked around twice and then decided what I wanted to buy. It was a nice afternoon out and I like what I got - now to go make something! I am going to Beadfest in Philadelphia in August - when I go there to shop I want to have a list and some idea of what I want - that is a big show and can be overwhelming.

Lapis Cab - Part 2

This is the second step in my cab - I have added the lapis chips around it. I love the color and I have some beautiful denim lapis beads for the necklace with a silver loop and toggle closure - working on this later today and loving it. It will be hard to part with this one I think.

Redwood - Pendant and Beaded Necklace

This necklace is called Redwood. The pendant is a carnelian stone in a silver setting. It measures 1 1/2 inches plus the bail. The necklace is made up of mahogany obsidian melon beads, 6 mm red aventurine beads, wooden beads, copper seed beads and a copper loop and toggle closure.

I like the coloring in this necklace and the mixture of textures and materials. Although I mostly do beadweaving I like to do some stringing from time to time. I like the freedom of this and the mix and match of materials - it's fun.

What I'm Working On

I bought this cab last summer at a rock and gem shop in PA. It is a beautiful blue/grey with a touch of rust. I have been looking at it for sometime and decided last night to finally jump in and use it as the focal for a new necklace. I have the most amazing denim lapis beads and chips to pair with this - I am excited and hope it comes out the way I envision.

Hidden Garden - Beaded Necklace and Pendant

So I made something besides earrings!!! I had this shell pendant for a long time - probably over 30 years - it was mine and I used to wear it on a silver chain way back when. I always liked it a lot and decided to recycle it. I paired it with 6mm China nephrite beads (jade) and pink beads and spacers. I love it - simple yet striking. The shell pendant is very iridescent and looks great with the olive green and pink beads. It measures 1 1/4 inch plus the bail. The necklace also has a silver loop and toggle closure. I love to recycle stuff and give things like my shell pendant a new life. Can't wait to get to PA and the antique shops and auctions this year.

Earrings Again

The last of the earrings for now. I especially like the top pair - I made something similar for my cousin this past summer. I guess I will go list these in my shops - so much work - photos, correcting the photos, listing, blogging, FB - I sometimes wonder why I bother. I spend so much time on the computer with this and I also have an Etsy Shop for my art work. I just wish I was seeing some results - sadly I am not.

More Earrings

Another pair of earrings. Glass beads, silver spacers, silver flat round bead all on a wrapped head pin. Fun to make fun to wear.

Another Pair of Beaded Earrings

I made 5 pair of earrings the other day and here is another pair. I really enjoyed making these - working with wire again - so I went out and bought some wooden beads and earring wires so I can make some more. I think they will be good for the craft shows this year. I want to get a nice earring rack to showcase all my pretties. Need to get in and do some beading - today was a painting day for me.

New Earrings

I spent my time yesterday making some beaded earrings - made 5 pair and took the photos this AM. Here is the first - they consists of wooden beads, spacers, glass beads - all on copper wire. I made a pair of beaded earrings like this for my cousin this summer and liked them but never made anymore. I thought they might be good for the spring/summer craft shows.

I started off working with wire a few years ago but have since moved on to beadweaving. It was fun to get back into the wire a bit. I like the earrings a lot and will be doing more - I may even do some other wire work too - you never know. I have a lot of wire and all the tools.

My Fringed Bead

Wooo Hooo - look at this. I made my fringed bead and I LOVE it. I thought this would just be a learning experience but my bead came out awesome. I used some various chips that were sitting on my beading table and I like the color and texture.

I bought this pattern from The Jade Dog and it is great, easy to understand - well just look at my first bead. New addition to my jewelry box.

Two New Pair of Earrings

As I said in a previous post I am making some jewelry for myself - these are 2 more earrings for moi. The are from the Medici Drop pattern in Marcia DeCoster's Beaded Opulence book. I think I am done with earrings for now and a bracelet is in my future.

I am in a reflective period right now trying to decide how to best spend my creative energies. Before I got involved with the jewelry I was and still am a painter - large abstracts on canvas and paper and smaller watercolor landscapes. I have not been painting at all lately and I am not sure why - just not doing it. This is not to say I do not have a large body of work in my studio but I am just not producing any new art right now.

My dilemma is where to spend my time - painting or making jewelry - or just chuck both and give it all up - yea that's right, that is something I am considering - get rid of the pressure to create/produce. I have not made any decision yet and am considering all options and I am not taking this lightly. I think a lot has to do with if and when I sell my NJ house, where we will be living and so forth. An awful lot to think about.

The Family Jewels

I have had this bracelet for as long as I can remember. It was my mothers and she will be 92 this year so it is very old. I have no idea what it is made of or where she got it. There is writing on the back of one of the images but worn away so it is unreadable. I have always loved this bracelet and that is part of the reason I am taking that metalsmithing class at BeadFest in August. I thought the samples from that class kind of resemble this old bracelet and I am anxious to learn some new techniques. I love old jewelry and plan on visiting some antique shops and auctions this summer when I am living in PA again. Old jewelry is fun to recycle into my own designs but I would never part with this bracelet. It is very tarnished but I am not sure I would want to do anything to make it shiny - it looks old and it is.

Etsy in the Press

I got a call last week from a reporter at our local paper The Asbury Park Press. He was doing an article in the business section on Etsy and wanted to ask me some questions. Here is the article. I am excited about this and sure hope it sends some customers my way. This is especially true at this time since I am in planning and decision making mode. I could use a boost! I figure any press is good - anything that will get the shops names out there is a plus. Good way to start the week.

Earrings For Me

I made these Medici Drop earrings last night - they are from Marcia DeCoster's Beaded Opulence book. I want to spend some time making some things for myself rather then for my shops. I really love earrings and have been wearing the same old thing for a long time now so these are the newest addition to my personal jewelry box. I love how easy these were to make and I love the look and feel of them when wearing. I am also going to make a pair in yellow/gold. I want to make myself a nice bracelet maybe freeform, but I need to think about what I want first. I bought a pattern from The Jade Dog for a fringed beaded bead pendant. I have admired these beaded beads for a long time and I am going to make me one soon.

I am in a reflective mood and need to make some decisions. I also want to change this blog a bit make it more about how I work, what inspires me, how I feel rather than just what I made. There will be some changes coming along for me - I hate change but sometimes there is no other choice - that is the way it seems to me now.

Beadfest Philadelphia August 2010

I know it seems so early to even be thinking about August yet - but the registration is open for Beadfest in Philadelphia. I missed it last year and really want to go this year. One of my beady resolutions was to take a class or two and learn something new. So this is the class I signed up for today and I am so excited. It is called Scrap Box Bracelet and will be taught by Kim St.Jean. It is a beginners class on metalsmithing and here is the description: "In this class you will learn about a variety of cold connections. You will see how you can literally take scraps from the scrap box and combine them in appealing ways using balance and line. The results are a knock out!"

Well this will be new for me and something I have been interested in trying. I love my seed beads and maybe at some point I can combine the beadweaving with metal. I just think this looks like a fun class and I am in love with the bracelets. Woooo Hooooo - now I can't wait for August.

Tough Biker Chick - Beaded Pendant and Necklace

Finished and listed this pendant/necklace yesterday. I have mixed feelings about selling this one - I really like the simplicity of it and it is so me. I wanted to make just a simple pendant and necklace - nothing fancy and full with fringe and other beadwork. I think I did just that. I spent the day today at Cape May - it was a beautiful bright day - well a bit cold next to the ocean. It was a nice break from being in the house - I have become quite the hermit this winter. The only problem was all the stores and shops in Cape May are closed - good thing we found an excellent restaurant for lunch. Great day talking art and getting inspiration - I may just paint tomorrow.

Life Patterns - Beaded Pendant and Necklace

Well I finished my pendant/necklace. I like it a lot and find it to be a contrast in colors and textures. The focal ended up measuring 2 1/2 inches in length and 2 1/4 inches in width - this is including the fringe. The necklace is made using 8mm topaz fresh water pearls and size 11 and size 8 seed beads that match the fringe in a spiral rope stitch. It also has a gold toggle and loop closure. The length of the necklace is 17 inches plus the closure. I enjoyed making this one - I guess because everything worked out so well - no problems at all - they all should be like this. This pendant/necklace is listed in my Etsy Shop and my 1000 Markets Shop.

Ammonite Pendant/Necklace Part 2

So I have been working on my little ammonite pendant - I have added branch fringe all around and next working on the necklace portion. I know that will go fast compared to the fringe. I am liking the way this is shaping up so far - I especially like the color combination and I was not too sure about the gun metal gray beads but the ammonite has a lot of the grey in it and it is working out OK.

What I Am Working On

Just started working this ammonite - I am making a pendant and will also make a necklace to go with it. This is not the greatest ammonite and I have had it and another one since the summer - but I do like how it is coming so far. I felt like working on something more complex - I have been doing a lot of earrings lately - so this is a bigger project.

Primitive/Rustic Beaded Bracelets

I have decided to make a few rustic looking bracelets. These consists of knotted cord or hemp with beads, charms, wood and just about anything else I can string. They are finished off with a button and loop closure. I want them to have a rustic look and feel - not the polished look of beadwoven jewelry like I usually make. So far I have completed 2 bracelets Harvest and Licorice - they are fun to make and even more fun to wear. Both in my Etsy Shop and my 1000 Markets Shop.

More Earrings

Well I think I am winding down on the earring making - I like this pair a lot. The center is a silver 6mm pearl surrounded by size 11 and size 8 seed beads. Also 3 strands of fringe. They measure about 2 1/2 inches in length. In my Etsy and 1000 Markets shop now.

Beaded Fringed Earrings

My earring making is continuing into 2010 - this is a pair of rose/red and gold fringed that I finished yesterday. I also started a silver and black pair which I hope to finish later today. I am listing these in my Etsy Shop and my 1000Markets Shop next. I think I am ready to move on to either a bracelet or necklace since I have quite a few earrings now listed in my shops and I do get bored easily.

Happy 2010

So it's a new year 2010. We had a quiet night last night stayed home and watched the ball drop. I was a little sad it was raining and I couldn't see the full blue moon - so I am posting this photo of a moon bracelet. I want to make some beady resolutions for this year so here goes in no particular order.

1. Get better at marketing - I love to create but I am not very good at selling - this has to change.

2. Organize my beading supplies and my bead room. I want to know what I have, where it is and how much I paid for it.
3. Once organized I want to start using some of what I already have before I go out buying more stuff.
4. Organize all my patterns and books so I can possibly find something.
5. I want to work on getting better using RAW - I have made a few RAW pieces but am unsure if I am beading in the right direction.
6. I want to have fun and not sweat the small stuff - bead things I love with colors I love and just maybe learn something new.
7. I would like to attend a beading event this year - possibly Bead Fest in Philadelphia in August.
8. I want to take at least 2 classes this year - not sure on what yet.

Well that seems like a hefty list so I better stop - if I do at least half of the above it will be a great year!
