Morocco - Bead Embroidery Cuff

I just realized I never added this cuff to my blog - not that it is a bad thing but I did post pictures of it in progress so I may as well post the finished photos too.  I usually do my cuffs on the brass blanks but I only have 1 blank left and until I sell a cuff I cannot buy any more blanks. Since selling is not something that happens much for me I decided I would try my luck at a "blankless" cuff.  I still think I like the blanks better but with this method you can make much larger cuffs.  I have a small wrist but not everyone does and I have a friend that cannot wear a cuff that is made on a blank so maybe this is a good thing for me to explore. I loved the colors of this one, kind of like milk chocolate and who could argue with that!!!  I have my next projects picked out and one of them will be a bead embroidery cuff - so I guess I will go and get started on some beading.

New project - Bead Embroidery Cuff

Started working on my next project this bead embroidery cuff - it is all earth tones and right now is further along than this photo.  I love doing these - I just pick a focal, lay out a bunch of beads that I think will go with that focal and just start beading - no planning, no sweat.  I still need to think of a name for this one.

Moonshadow - Bead Embroidery Pendnat

This is my latest creation - it is called Moonshadow.  The 2 focals are actually buttons. The main button I bought some time ago - I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it but I loved it and had to have it. I pretty much had an idea of how I wanted this pendant to look and I also knew I didn't want to bead a rope to go with it.  Right now it is on a black leather cord but I also have placed it on silver ball chain and it looks just as good on either. The necklace portion is rather long 24 inches and the fringe is a combo of regular fringe and spiral rope 6 inches long.  I LOVE this necklace and although it is in my Etsy Shop I just might pull it out and keep it for myself.

Etsy - The Thrill Is Gone

Today is my anniversary on Etsy I opened my jewelry shop Totally Twisted on March 11, 2007.  So I’ve been on there 5 years. A lot has changed in that 5 years and yet nothing has changed.  I still struggle to make any sales, struggle to be seen and I just plain struggle.

I have 2 shops Totally Twisted and Jean Hutter – Artist and they couldn’t be more different.  I do quite well selling my paintings and I am so thankful for that but the jewelry is another story.

Thinking back on my early days on Etsy – I remember the Treasuries and Treasury West.  I would sit awaiting the treasury to open up and when I snagged one I was so happy.  Being in a treasury then was really something and if you made the front page – that was beyond awesome.  I used to look through the treasuries and see which got the most views. I would always comment and if I happened to be lucky enough to be in one – I was grabbing that screen shot so I could save it.  Not any more.  I don’t think I have made a treasury or even looked at one in over a year.

I also was always on the Etsy forums – reading posts, commenting and enjoying the humor, in-fighting and just the helpful hints. I do not think I have looked at the forum pages of Etsy in over a year or more.

And the Etsy Teams – boy there were a few teams I would have given anything to be on.  There were teams I applied to and was rejected.  Actually I applied to a team a month or so ago – was rejected and was pissed for a day or so and then didn’t care.  I figure selling is pretty much a singular pursuit so I have always done it alone no since changing that now – what was I thinking.

As I reflect on this post I wonder why for me the Etsy thrill is gone.  I think a lot has to do with Facebook and the amount of time it eats up in a day.  Not that the time is all wasted – I have meet many new friends, can promote my Etsy Shops – heck I have even had sales originate from Facebook.   I also think selling jewelry on Etsy or any place for that matter is not an easy task – there is so much good and bad competition out there. I think a good move is to create tutorials – something I think about but just do not do (yet) – I love to bead but don’t know if I want to get caught up in the pattern making, the illustrations or even the kitting.

So where do I go from here – I will stay on Etsy even if I am not excited anymore.  I will continue to bead because I love to make jewelry.  I don’t see me back making Treasuries or on the Etsy forums as Facebook has replaced that for me.  When I do find myself in a Treasury I still am grateful for the nod and excited to think someone likes my work.  I also may do a few craft shows this year – not that I find that too thrilling but it is a good way to network, get feedback on my work and just maybe make a sale.  I don’t know what the answer is for me and I hope this does not come across as snobbish but this is just the way it is.

Bead Embroidery Pendant - Starting Out

I bought the top portion of this soon to be pendant recently - it is a button as is the bottom portion.  I just loved the look, color and texture of it. I did a bit of work on it last night and I love the way it is coming along so far.  I know exactly how I want to finish this pendant/necklace which is rare for me - I usual just bead and hope for the best. The only thing I am missing right now is the name but it will come - probably as continue to work.  I also started a bead embroidery cuff but I am way more excited about this for now and will finish before I seriously start work on the cuff.  I have so many ideas I am overflowing - I just hope I get to bead 1/2 of them.

The Crystal Garden - Bracelet

I just finished this beaded bracelet.  It is very hard to photo because it is clear/crystal beads.  I did photo it on a black background so that did help but you really cannot see the beauty of this bracelet in the pictures. It was a fun project - something different for a change.  It is composed of crystal seed beads beaded into leaf shapes and a few crystal flower beads as accents.  I like it a lot - now on to the next project whatever that might be.
